Nick Neumayer and Daniel Polce are the 2026 Ron Balicki Scholarship Recipients
NORMAN, Okla. -- The GCAA announced today that Nick Neumayer and Daniel Polce are the recipients of the 2026 Ron Balicki Scholarship. Neumayer, the Journalism graduate student at Northwestern University, and Polce, the PGA Golf Management senior minoring in Journalism at Florida Gulf Coast University, will each receive a $5,000 grant.
Neumayer is expected to graduate with a Master of Science in Journalism with a Specialization in Sports Media from Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism this September. As an undergraduate at Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Journalism and a minor in Italian, the Niles, Ill., native proactively sought out work with Northwestern Athletics. He joined the Northwestern Athletics Communications staff as a Communications Assistant in June 2024.
“Being named a recipient of the Ron Balicki Scholarship is a tremendous honor,” said Neumayer. “Having studied the legacy Ron Balicki carved out as a golf reporter, I am incredibly proud to attempt to carry on that legacy as I prepare for a future in sports media.”
As a Communications Assistant, Neumayer has stepped up by serving as the Sports Information Director for Northwestern’s men’s and women’s golf programs for the 2025-26 season. A men’s program that has qualified for nine consecutive NCAA Regionals and a women’s program that won their first NCAA National Championship in 2025, Neumayer manages their statistics, media, and website content for NUSports.com. He keeps record books, athletics calendars, and updates all player profiles while composing and editing content for NUSports.com, including game recaps and previews for tournaments, press releases, and feature stories.
Also an Edward J. and Lee Lindahl Scholarship recipient at Northwestern, a recent project Neumayer wrote and published featured women’s golfer Lauryn Nguyen, who was named WGCA Honorable Mention All-America and an Arnold Palmer Cup participant in 2025.
“Her experience is inspiring, and I was deeply honored to be the one to share it,” Neumayer said. “As I prepare to take the next steps into golf journalism, I will remember that it’s my responsibility to tell the story with the care it deserves and continue to highlight inspiring voices like Lauryn’s across all levels of golf, just as Ron Balicki did throughout his career.”
Concurrent with his role inside Northwestern Athletics, Neumayer is co-host and editor of Center Cup - A Golf Podcast, a weekly audio and video show with two other Northwestern graduate school journalists that covers professional and amateur golf. The podcast can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and X. He has also been a contributor for Cubbies Crib, an independent Chicago Cubs fan blog where he published over 50 articles that reported on breaking news, press conferences, and trade rumors among other topics. The June 2025 articles generated over 100,000 page views on personal bylines, adding to one of the highest view-counts ever for a FanSided MLB page.
As an Athletic Communications Student Assistant for Loyola University Chicago from October 2021 to May 2024, Neumayer handled media requests from student media, reinforced game day operations, and produced, edited, and distributed game previews, recaps, feature stories, and press releases for LoyolaRamblers.com. Beginning his sophomore year, he was the Ramblers’ head media contact for men’s and women’s golf.
Neumayer was a Loyola Chicago Men’s Basketball Beat Writer for NBC Sports Chicago from October 2021 to September 2024, authoring over 100 articles for the station and delivering timely coverage through web, X, and Instagram. He was present at every home game, covered postgame press conferences for every game, and coordinated media access, confirmed information, and enhanced coverage communicating with Loyola Chicago’s Sports Information Directors.
Polce is set to graduate from Florida Gulf Coast next month with a Bachelor of Science in PGA Golf Management minoring in Journalism. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a Master of Science in Golf Management overseas after recently being accepted to Ulster University in Northern Ireland.
“I’m incredibly honored to be chosen as one of the 2026 Ron Balicki Scholarship recipients,” said Polce. “To be recognized in Mr. Balicki’s name carries weight. The award not only serves as validation for the effort I have placed into the craft but will be of invaluable assistance as I prepare to enter graduate school in a few months’ time, where I will pursue an MSc in Golf Management from Ulster University in Northern Ireland as a newly minted PGA Member. I cannot thank the committee enough for my selection. This scholarship allows me to fully commit to the pursuit of my dreams.”
A Zephyrhills, Fla., native, Polce has been an Intern/Staff Writer for Global Golf Post since May 2025. About the Ron Balicki Scholarship
The Ron Balicki Scholarship for aspiring golf journalists is dedicated to the memory of Ron Balicki for his lifelong commitment to covering the game of golf.
Few individuals have done more to bring exposure to college golf than Balicki. Since practically inventing the college golf beat while at Golfweek in 1983, Balicki became part of the fabric of the college and amateur game. He covered his first golf tournament in 1980 while with the Florida Daily News. He won first-place and third-place in Golf Writers Association of America writing contests and won four first-place and numerous honorable mention awards with the International Network of Golf. Balicki also won three first-place awards from the Texas Golf Writers Association. He was a winner of the Golf Writers Association of America Jimmy D’Angelo Award and the Northwest Florida Sports Association Al Byrne Award, both of which are presented to a person for contributions, devotion, and service to the organization and the community.
A 2010 inductee into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame, Balicki covered every NCAA Championship dating back to 1985 and every GCAA National Convention since its inception until 2013, when the cancer that claimed his life prevented him from traveling. Dubbed "Wrong Ron" for his propensity to incorrectly pick the winner of the NCAA Championships and playfully teased for his uncanny ability to bring the rain with him to events he covered, Balicki was truly fond of the sport and people he covered and was loved back by the players, coaches, and everyone involved with college golf. Truly one of the kindest men one could ever meet, Ron is greatly missed.
The first Ron Balicki Scholarship was awarded for the Spring 2018 semester with a $2,500 grant awarded to Luke Hendry from the University of Texas. A $5,000 grant ($2,500 per semester) has been awarded since the 2018-19 academic year.
Past winners of the Ron Balicki Scholarship include Henry Oelhafen (Vanderbilt University), Ben Parris (Arizona State University), Carson Racich (Florida Gulf Coast University), Alex Gelman (Arizona State University), Cade Tjomsland (Palm Beach Atlantic University), Brayden Conover (University of Oklahoma), Tracy Peyton (Palm Beach Atlantic University), and Hendry.
Any college/university student at the undergraduate or graduate level or high school journalist may apply for consideration. A recipient is only eligible to receive the Ron Balicki scholarship once during their college career.
